A Navy Petty Officer’s Worldwide Experience

Leslie Demark’s eight years of service in the Navy took her around the world and back. A native of Houston, Demark attained the rank of hospital corpsman petty officer third class in the Fleet Marine Force. Assignments included serving at a Navy hospital in Spain, on a humanitarian mission to Bangladesh, and at a Marine Corps station in California.“I was introduced to many high-pressure situations and was given so many responsibilities at a young age,” Demark said.

She was discharged from active duty in 2015 and served for two years in the Navy Individual Ready Reserve. She sought out veteranfriendly colleges, and that search led her in 2018 to Rutgers–Camden, where she found the university’s recognition as an excellent choice for veterans to be as advertised.“From the beginning, it felt like home,” said Demark, who lives in Gibbsboro, New Jersey. After she finishes her biology degree, she plans to earn a second degree in nursing and return to active duty.
